For the last few months I’ve been building a studio and small recording room, mostly for somewhere to try out new musical ideas and to maybe finally complete the album that Beelzebozo have been not-quite finishing for what feels like a very long time!
Building the framework which will keep the noise in
This had to go round the all the walls and the ceiling
Here we have started to screw the panels together. The room is taking shape!
Some of the framework was a bit 'patchy' but it's not like it's going to be seen again...
A layer of insulation becomes the tasty filling in an MDF sandwich.
Insulation stuffed into bottom of panel. Window plug has yet to be made...
This door was free - 'donated' by a local skip. About 3" too short, but we dealt with it...
Our nice shiny new floor. A little insulation under here and about 6" of concrete
Once insulated and panelled, we built a plug for the window. Suddenly got a lot darker!
The last piece of panelling. A nice feeling, 'cause working with that insulation is nasty.
Note hastily contructed 'kick plate' to conceal badly fitting door. Won't see this later.
More insulation goes onto the door. Jason (my building buddy) was quite proud of this.
As every studio I've ever been in has got carpet on the walls, I had to do it here too
Carpetty goodness. It's a bit like being in a padded cell (not that I have experience...)
The door is a bit difficult to spot now - Maybe I ought to put an 'Exit' sign up!
It's a small room, but there's just about space to set a drum kit up. So I did.
No lights or electricity yet, but the room is just about useable - sounds OK too!
Sax, bass, piano and drums. Enough room for a jazz quartet (if you're good friends!)
The control room was simpler; just needed some plasterboard and paint (sort of)
The ceiling was a bit tricky, but otherwise this was straightforward. Hence fewer pics.
